National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August every year to commemorate the birthday of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand who won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. In a bid to pay tribute to such a legendary player, the Government of India decided to celebrate his birthday as the National Sports Day in 2012.
Lt. Col. P. R. Godavarma Raja (13 October 1908 – 30 April 1971), often referred to as G. V. Raja, was an Indian sports promoter and administrator, pilot, sportsman and Sanskrit scholar. He took special care in inspiring the youth into sports and was instrumental in founding the Kerala Sports Council in 1953. G. V. Raja occupied the post of Council President till he was killed in a flight mishap in 1971. G. V. Raja was the founder President of the Kerala State Sports Council as well as Kerala Cricket Association, and patron of a large number of sports clubs and associations, G. V. Raja's birth anniversary, 13 October, is observed as "Kerala Sports Day".
CM Gold Cup Football Championship Under14
Football is one of the prioritized sports disciplines in Kerala based on the performance at National and international level. For performance enhancement, training at grass root level with inter club competitions and inter district tournaments must be promoted. Many developed countries start talent hunt for children below 10 years of age and train them very professionally through organized and systematic training strategies. In Kerala, much importance was not being given to the “under 14category” in football. With the successful roll out of the “Kick-off” Programme, football is gaining huge popularity across the State. Hence, it is proposed to conduct intra district and inter-district football tournament for “Under14 (U14) CM Gold Cup Football Championship” as an annual event. While it will be limited to Boys in the initial years, later it is proposed to include Girl’s Tournament also in this format.
Yoga is an ancient Indian practice, which has now spread all over the world. All forms of exercises normally address the requirements of the physical health of the human body, whereas only Yoga has the unique distinction of addressing the physical and mental health of the human body.
Yoga has gained immense popularity over the world due to its holistic benefits for the human body, wherein it addresses the overall health of the physical body and the mind. Yoga has its origin in ancient India and recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.
Considering the gaining popularity of Yoga and its holistic benefit for all human beings, it is proposed that the school children in Kerala should be given rudimentary knowledge about Yoga through the “Yoga for all” programme
